Description
Phil decided to do an afternoon flight with 2 other pilots, because conditions were looking pretty good. The 3 pilots where flying in a group, Phil was the last one. They were rolling and diving to lose altitude to fly the steep cliffs and gullies behind the landing zone.
Phil normally didn't take risks. I think he was flying with more experienced pilots and following them and lost concentration on his flying. He probably went into a situation he was not able to manage or recover an impacted the ground at high speed after 2 rolls or a 720 dive. He impacted the ground before the steep section begins, so maybe he misjudged the situation and crashed.
The 2 pilots he was flying with didn't see him crash and realized he was missing after landing.
His friends and a group of hikers who saw him crash called the mountain rescue and the helicopter found him and the paramedics declared him "dead on impact".
The 2 pilots he was flying with described the conditions after the flight as slightly windy and not turbulent. No strong thermals or winds.
